Cultural Theories and Methods

'Culture' is a wide and often somewhat vague field. To help navigate the mass of contemporary cultural theories, cultural concepts and methodologies of cultural research, a research area is dedicated to the basic reception, interconnection and application of cultural theoretical concepts that are of cross-disciplinary relevance to the broad research on the cultural facets of Europe. Equally fundamental in its aims is the investigation of the various methodologies of cultural research, which range from hermeneutic and textual-analytical methodologies to quantitative social research. Moreover, since empirical research, historical analysis and cultural-scientific description of cultures and societies cannot exist without prior theoretical knowledge, assumptions and models of interpretation, knowledge of and reflection on theories is a crucial aspect in further research on European culture(s).
